Vinh Tran — Composer & Tonmeister

sculpture made out of musical instruments by Vinh Tran

Vinh Tran is a composer-performer, Tonmeister and videographer based in Berlin. His works have been featured at leading festivals for contemporary and experimental music, including Kontakte Festival, ZKM next_generation, and Klangwerkstatt Berlin.

Working across the analog–digital continuum, he performs algorithmically derived patterns on piano, prepares guitars with acoustic distortion devices, and repurposes the laptop interface as a musical instrument. His performances foreground the interaction between body and machine, using these assemblages to question the boundaries between nature and culture. Drawing on his experience as a German-born artist of Vietnamese heritage, he interrogates the binaries that shape both musical and social perception: organic vs. synthetic, East vs. West, human vs. technological.

Specialising in electronic and electroacoustic music performance, he has provided live sound engineering and technical realisation for performances and installation works at Bauhaus Fest Dessau, Schwules Museum, and MEHRLICHT!MUSIK.

As a producer of classical music audio and video, his guiding principle is to create media of the highest artistic and technical quality. Trained as a Tonmeister at the University of the Arts in Berlin, he believes that the finest recordings emerge from a close synergy between artist and producer. His sensitivity to each performer’s aesthetic intent, combined with expertise in microphone placement, room acoustics, and repertoire-specific mixing strategies, allows him to realize a shared artistic vision in every project.
